CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Cody Hudson had five RBI and senior left-hander Stephen Huff pitched seven scoreless innings as Austin Peay downed Milwaukee, 9-1, Friday, at the Riverview Inn Invitational, played at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Huff allowed only two hits and struck out three, but issued four walks along the way. More importantly, the Govs starting pitcher and his defense caused the Panthers to strand nine runners while he was on the hill.
Hudson accounted for the Govs first five runs, in part due to timely hitting. He roped a two-run double down the right-field line in the second inning and crushed a three-run home run, his season's first, to left-center in the fourth.
Senior designated hitter Matt Kole lifted a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Govs a 6-1 lead.
The Govs then took advantage of a pair of Milwaukee errors to plate two seventh-inning runs. Freshman shortstop Reed Harper led off with a double and scored from second on a two-base throwing error by the Panther second baseman. Clinard later scored on another throwing error with Kole being credited with an RBI-fielder's choice.
Austin Peay's bullpen pitched the final two innings, junior Dylan Ray getting one inning of work along with sophomore Chuck Edlin.
Milwaukee's lone run came in the eighth as Paul Hoenecke laced a lead-off double in the left-center gap. A pair of long fly balls moved him around the bases and a Chad Pierce singled him in with two outs.
The Govs matched with a single run in the bottom of the eighth to set the final 9-1 margin.
Aside from Hudson's 2-for-3, five-RBI effort, senior catcher Trey Lucas and Harper each had two hits. Kole also added two RBI.
Four Panthers each had one hit. Starter Kyle Schmidt was tagged for the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in six innings.
The Govs return to action with a 3 p.m. Saturday, game against Dayton. SIU Edwardsville and Milwaukee begin the day with a 10 a.m., doubleheader.
