Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Austin Peay State University women's
soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Jacksonville State, Friday night, in Ohio
Valley Conference action.
It was the Lady Govs (5-7-1; 1-2-1 OVC) first tie since playing to a scoreless finish
at Murray State, Oct. 8, 2010. The was not atypical in the matchup between
Austin Peay and Jacksonville State as there have four ties in nine meetings
between the two teams.
"It was a tough match," said head coach Kelley Guth. "Jacksonville
State played hard and created a number of opportunities. We had our chances
too, but at the end of the day we couldn't get the result. We just didn't have
enough to finish it."
Austin Peay's offense was on the brink most of the night,
managing 24 shots and putting 13 on goal. Sophomore Natalia Ariza accounted for
eight shots, while sophomore Andy Quiceno and junior Emily Perkins had three
and two shots, respectively.
Jacksonville State (2-11-3; 1-2-3 OVC) got on the board
first when Kaitlyn Gregory was able to score a header from a corner kick in the
32nd minute. Austin Peay trailed at the break and needed until late
in the second half to find the equalizer.
With just less than 20 minutes left in the game, the Lady
Govs mounted a substantial attack. It started with a corner kick by sophomore
Emily Kink. Austin Peay increased its
pressure and it didn't take long for sophomore Tatiana Ariza to find Perkins
for 78th-minute goal.
In the 20 extra minutes, Jacksonville State outshot the Lady
Govs 3-2, but neither team could produce the game winner.
Austin Peay now turns its attention to Tennessee Tech, where
it will play a 2 p.m., Sunday OVC match. The Golden Eagles lost, 2-1, to Murray
State, Friday night.
"We have to refocus and be ready to play at Tennessee Tech,
Sunday," Guth said. "We have to play better than we did tonight. We're going to
have to make some lineup adjustments due to injuries.
"It's going to come down to our players having to step up
and play their part. We have to come together and push through. It's going to
be a tough game on Sunday and we have to be ready to battle."
