BERKELEY, Calif.-No. 23 California limited Austin Peay State University to just 17.2 percent first-half shooting to claim its third straight victory as it defeated the Governors, 72-55, Tuesday night in the Progressive College Basketball Experience Classic, played at Haas Pavilion.

The loss drops the Governors to 0-2 as it prepares to play Oral Roberts, 7 p.m., Saturday, in Tulsa. Cal is perfect so far in the 2011-12 season.

Playing without center John Fraley (concussion), the Governors were hoping to get off to a good start both offensively and defensively against the nationally ranked Bears, instead they received the opposite. With the score tied 2-2, California ripped off 15 straight points. During that same period the Governors missed six shots-gaining zero offensive rebounds-and committed four turnovers.

But it didn't end there. Although the Governors hit three free throws to stop the drought, it was still 9 ½ minutes between field goals until Will Triggs tossed in a stab hook shot in the lane. By then the Governors were down 21-7. After APSU cut it to 24-11 with 6:32 left in the half, California, led by All-America guard candidate Jorge Gutierrez , outscored the Governors 16-2 to end the half and take a 40-13 lead into intermission.

The Governors scratched back in the second half. With Melvin Baker, Herdie Lawrence and Josh Terry leading the charge, the Governors cut their deficit to 18, 56-38, with 8:27 left in the game and forcing Cal to call a timeout.  The Bears pushed the lead back out to 25 before the Govs made one final push late in the game, ending the game on a 10-2 run.

Terry led the Governors with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Baker, who was held out of the first half for "conduct unbecoming an Austin Peay basketball player," ended the game with 12 points and a team-high five rebounds.

Lawrence, in just his second college contest, tossed in 10 points, including the Governors only two pointers.

The Governors, in fact, finished just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from the three-point range. The Governors shot 54.5 percent (18 of 33) from the field in the second half, but still finished the night at 37.1 percent.

Gutierrez led Cal with 14 points while post players Harper Kamp and David Kravish ended with 12 points apiece, going a combined 12 of 14 from the floor.

The Bears finished night shooting 52.8 percent (28 of 53) from the floor.
