Streak over...Govs finally notch first victory in overtime

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -The streak is over...although it took a few extra minutes to do so.

Josh Terry scored six overtime points, including the first four and the last one, to lead Austin Peay State University to an 86-82 victory, Monday night, against Arkansas State in non-conference basketball action played in the Dunn Center.

The victory was the Govs' first win of the 2011-12 season after nine straight losses. But it didn't come without drama.

The Govs led much of the contest and were in front by as many as 11 points with 7:05 remaining. But APSU's mettle was tested in the closing minutes as the Red Wolves clawed back on the backs of Marcus Hooten and Ed Townsel. In fact, Townsel made it a five-point game with a jumper and when Trey Finn nailed a long three pointer with 2:08 left, Austin Peay's lead was down to two, 66-64, with 2:08 remaining.

Austin Peay and Arkansas State traded free throws before the Governors committed a turnover with 1:23 remaining to give ASU the basketball. Hooten made the Govs pay with a three pointer with 1:08 left to give the visitors a 69-68 advantage, their first lead since the 8:25 mark of the first half.

After Josh Terry missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Red Wolves went up by three, 71-68, on a Hooten drive into the lane.  Melvin Baker then answered with two free throws to cut it to one, 71-70, with 24 seconds left.

Austin Peay then fouled Finn with 21 seconds left. He made the first free toss before missing the second. The Govs then set up a play with Edmondson driving the lane before dumping a bounce pass inside to Will Triggs, who tied the game with the layup with 13 seconds left.

Arkansas State had one final chance to win it only to have Triggs block Finn's shot with six seconds left. Freshman guard Herdie Lawrence came away with the rebound before having his own shot blocked out of bounds with 2.1 seconds left.

On the last play of regulation, Edmondson contested jumper inside banked off the rim as the horn sounded, sending the game into overtime.

The Governors took control from the outset, with Triggs winning the tip and Terry knocking down a jumper with 4:29 left. After Arkansas State missed, Terry again answered with a jumper to give the Govs a 76-72 advantage.

After a third ASU miss, Triggs grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made one of two free throws and Governors never saw their overtime advantage shrink to less than three points the overtime's remainder.

Terry led the Governors with 22 points while Baker recorded his season's second double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Triggs narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. He also had five assists as did Jerome Clyburn and TyShwan Edmondson, whose three in overtime with 26 seconds put the game out of reach.

Hooten led all scorers for Arkansas State, now 3-5, with 27 points while Townsel and Malcoln Kirkland added 14 apiece.

Austin Peay shot 50.9 percent (29 of 57) from the floor, only the third time this season the Govs have shot better than 40 percent from the floor.
