CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - John Fraley matched his career with 25 points as Austin Peay State University captured its first Ohio Valley Conference victory, Thursday night, as it downed Eastern Kentucky, 80-65, in Dave Aaron Arena.

The victory snapped the Governors four-game losing streak as they improved to 1-3 in the OVC and 4-13 overall.

Eastern Kentucky suffered its second OVC loss, falling to 4-2 in the league and 10-8 overall.

And it was the Governors dominant inside performance that triggered the victory. Fraley finished the night 10-of-12 from the floor while fellow post player Melvin Baker was 6-of-9 in scoring 16 points as Austin Peay shot a season-best 60.4 percent (29 of 48) from the floor.

In fact, it was Fraley's play midway through the second half that helped the Governors blow open a tight game. After Austin Peay led by as much as 11 points, 42-31, early in the second half, it was Jaron Jones who brought EKU all the way back, scoring nine points on the Colonels' 18-6 run that saw the visitors lead, 49-48, with 12:21 remaining.

A jumper by Baker gave APSU the lead back before Will Triggs and Josh Terry each hit a free throw for a 52-49 Govs lead. Then it was Fraley taking over. He himself went on a 9-2 run. From the 9:44 mark to 6:39 left in the game, Fraley not only made three buckets and three free throws, he also had four offensive and two defensive rebounds in that span. He finished with 12 rebounds, producing his second double-double this season-both coming against EKU.

Much of his and Baker's inside work could be attributed to APSU's best ball movement this season.  The Govs ended with 16 assists, six by TyShwan Edmondson, who tied his career high in that department.

Jaron Jones finished with 17 points by EKU, none after the 8:06 mark of the second half as 5-11 freshman guard Herdie Lawrence, despite a height disadvantage, was able to dislodge the 6-5 Jones from his offensive rhythm. It was the first time in the last four games where Jones failed to score 20 points-he ended with 17.

Timmy Knipp was EKU's only other double-figure scorer with 11 points off the bench.  After taking the 49-48 lead with 12:21 left, the Colonels scored just 16 points the game's remainder, nine in the final two minutes after the game was decided.

Austin Peay finished the night 20 of 31 (64.5 percent) from the free-throw line, the first time in OVC play they failed to reach the 70 percent mark. Eastern Kentucky, which attempted 26 three pointers on the night while forgoing inside play, failed to convert a free throw in five attempts.
