Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech's two were too much for Austin Peay State University's one, Thursday night.
Kevin Murphy and Jud Dillard, the nation's No. 2 scoring duo, combined for 62 points to offset John Fraley's 31-point effort as Tennessee Tech defeated Austin Peay, 94-88, Thursday night in Ohio Valley Conference action in Dave Aaron Arena.
The victory improves Tennessee Tech to 15-9 overall, 7-4 in the OVC, while the Govs lost their second straight and third in the last four games as they fell to 9-16 overall and 6-6 in the OVC.
After being held to 19 first-half points, the Murphy-Dillard duo exploded in the final half, going a combined 9-of-20 from the floor, but more importantly 22-of-23 at the free throw line to tally 42 points. Murphy, who had 50 points against SIU Edwardsville earlier in the week, finished with 33 points against the Govs while Dillard added 29.
It was Murphy, however, who single-handedly brought back Tennessee Tech from an early five-point second half deficit. With Austin Peay leading 38-33, Murphy connected on three straight unanswered three pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 42-38 lead. Tennessee Tech would never trail again.
The Golden Eagles built as much as a nine-point lead eight minutes into half, but the Govs clawed back mostly on the shoulders of Fraley, who scored 22 second-half points. On seven different occasions the Governors cut the deficit to three points, but each time Tennessee Tech responded, multiple times from the free-throw line. Tennessee Tech shot a remarkable 29 of 31 (93.5 percent) from the line in the second half.
And when the Governors, after a Melvin Baker three pointer and his subsequent dunk after a Govs steal with 20 seconds remaining, trimmed the deficit to two, 90-88, it was Dillard who responded at the foul line, making two with 16 seconds and then Murphy making two more to seal the victory with seven seconds left.
As a result, the Govs wasted Fraley's career performance. The Govs' 6-8 senior center finished the night 10 of 13 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. His 31-point game was the Govs' first 30-point effort since TyShwan Edmondson had 33 against Tennessee State, Jan 15, 2011. Fraley also grabbed 17 rebounds-one off his career high-to finish with his season's fifth double-double. He also had four blocked shots.
Melvin Baker added 17 points while Josh Terry tossed in 10.
The Governors finished the night 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) from the floor along with 24-of-30 from the free-throw line. As good as the Governors were from the line-their OVC best percentage (80 percent)-it still didn't match TTU's 30 for 37 performance.
The Govs again were beset by turnovers, committing 19 on the night, leading to 27 Tennessee Tech points, several leading to fast-break buckets.
"I thought we played pretty well the first half," APSU coach Dave Loos said. "They had significantly more fast-break points than us because we keep turning the ball over. Our turnovers led directly to baskets - easy baskets. Second half, it was the same thing. We had a three-point lead, but we turn it over and it turns into baskets.
"The point is, we're really not giving ourselves a chance to win. The effort was great, but we're not giving ourselves a chance."
