Post-Game Notes: APSU vs. Eastern Illinois

Box Score

  • Austin Peay has now lost 15 straight contest, the longest in FCS.
  • APSU also has lost nine straight OVC contests.
  • Austin Peay had just 40 offensive yards compared to 346 by EIU with 5:24 left in the half—and just nine total yards in the first quarter. They finished with 133 offensive yards in the half. For the game, the Govs were outgained 620 yards to 224.
  • Freshman Mickey Macius was expected to be redshirted but early in the second quarter that plan was tossed out the window. Although he threw an completion on his first pass, he finished the half 4-of-6 passing for 72 yards, including one of 35 yards to Javier Booker and another of 27 yards to Malik Boynton. Boynton's catch set up APSU's first-half score. Macius finished the contest 4-of-11 for 72 yards.
  • With Macius playing in the first half, APSU now has utilized four quarterbacks in three games—Macius, Darrien Boone, Trey Taylor and Timarious Mitchell.
  • When Justin Roberson slipped in from one-yard out with 3:27 left in the first half, it was the second Govs' offensive score this season.
  • APSU started two freshmen defensive ends, Tyler Schneider (two tackles) and Jule Pace (five tackles), while a third, Taylor Parris (four tackles), played a considerable amount of snaps as did defensive tackle Nicholis Matiere-Bey (four tackles) and linebacker Zach Stuart (five tackles).
  • Senior defensive tackle Malcolm Goines set a career-high with nine tackles against Eastern Illinois.   
  • Cornerback Montez Carlton led the Govs in tackles with 11, including nine solo stops.
  • Sophomore safety Jalen Miller recorded nine tackles in his first 2014 start.
  • Freshman defensive tackle Nicholis Maitiere-Bey recorded the Govs' first 2014 sack.
  • Ben Campbell has punted 10 times in each of the Governors contests. In 2013, he set APSU's record for single-season punts with 87.
  • When EIU blocked Ben Campbell's third-quarter punt and returned for a TD, it was the first time the senior had a punt blocked since Virginia Tech did it against the Govs in Week 2 of the 2012 season.
  • APSU converted just 2-of-15 third-down situations.
  • The Governors were charged with seven penalties for 84 yards, two that kept alive EIU drives
  • When APSU scored on the Justin Roberson, freshman Dakota Vincil, a left-footed kicker, knocked through the extra point in his first appearance.
  • Austin Peay has scored 13 points in three games.
  • In the last three games against Eastern Illinois the Govs have permitted 63, 65 and 63 points.
