Women’s soccer home opener highlights Governors FanFest, Sunday

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's soccer team hosts Evansville, 1 p.m., Sunday, in its home opener at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field, highlighting a full day of activities at the annual Governors FanFest.

Admission to the match is free. Posters, inflatables for kids and free food from Dairy Queen and Dominos will be provided throughout the afternoon. Autograph sessions will also be set up along the concourse area running from the Foy Center parking lot to the field, with the soccer team signing posters following the contest.

The Govs are 2-0 to start the regular season for the first time since 2013, and now return to their friendly confines where great success was had last year. In 2015, Austin Peay went 7-2-0 – the highest win total in Clarksville since 2012 - with 34 goals scored at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

APSU is coming off an Alabama road trip which saw it post a 2-1 victory over UAB, Aug. 19, before topping Alabama State, 4-1, two days later. Junior Kirstin Robertson was named adidas® OVC Offensive Player of the Week in leading the Govs offensively, scoring both game-winning goals over the weekend. In addition, senior Nicole Wojcik tallied a goal in each game, while senior Gina Fabbro and sophomore Jennifer Smith recorded their first goals of the season against the Hornets.

Evansville enters Sunday at 1-1-0 on the season, falling to Xavier, 0-2, and defeating Miami University, 2-0. Bronwyn Boswell scored both Purples Aces goals to open the season after bagging three last year. Whitney Biggs picked up the shutout victory against Miami, and has made nine saves to begin her senior season.

Last Time Against Evansville

Austin Peay and Evansville last met in an exhibition contest last season which finished level at 1-1. The most recent regular-season meeting came in 2014, with Evansville winning 3-0 thanks to two goals by Boswell. The Govs are 0-5-0 all-time in regular-season meetings against the Purple Aces.

Keep An Eye On

Mary Parker Powell. The freshman goalkeeper played the second half in each contest last weekend, and made two saves with no goals allowed.

Colombian catalyst. Redshirt freshman Pamela Penaloza has shown no signs of nerves in her first season as a Gov, serving as the distributor in the APSU attack. Through two games, Penaloza has two assists and has also taken two shots.

Endurance. Freshman midfielder Renee Semaan is the only APSU player to play the full 90 minutes in each match thus far.
