Austin Peay begins OVC Tourney stay, Thursday

November 20, 2019

CLARKSVILLE – For the fifth time in her career, Austin Peay State University volleyball head coach Taylor Mott will lead the Governors into the OVC Volleyball Championship. Austin Peay, the No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 seed Morehead State in a 3:30 p.m., Thursday first-round matchup.

Austin Peay finished the OVC regular season in a four-team tie for fifth place, but went 4-1 against the group of tied teams to win the No. 5 seed. It is the fourth consecutive season Austin Peay has posted a winning record in OVC play. The Govs are 49-15 (.766) in OVC play during that four-year span.

The winner of Thursday's Austin Peay-Morehead State match will face the winner of No. 1 Jacksonville State vs. No. 8 SIUE in a 6 p.m., Friday semifinal match. The championship match will be played at 6 p.m., Saturday between the semifinal winners. All seven matches of the 2019 OVC Volleyball Championship may be seen on ESPN+.

FROM THE SERVE

  • Senior Ginny Gerig Busse finished the regular season leading the OVC in digs (358) and digs per set (5.59) in league play. For the entire season she has recorded 558 digs (4.94 per set), ranking 21st among Division I players. She needs just six digs to reach 2,000 career digs.
  • Junior Brooke Moore covered all the milestones in the first weekend of November. She recorded her 1,000th career dig at Southeast Missouri, Nov. 7. The next day she notched her 1,000th career kill at UT Martin and became the eighth Govs player to join the Govs' Double Grand Club (1,000 kills and digs).
  • Freshman Tegan Seyring made an impact during OVC play, recording 139 (2.73 kills/set) of her 204 kills in league play. Eight of her nine double-digit kill outings came in OVC action, the ninth she posted against Texas Tech in September.
  • Junior Chloe Stitt led the Govs with 3.24 kills per set in OVC play, recording 175 kills while playing in 54 of the Govs 64 sets.
  • Austin Peay head coach Taylor Mott recorded her 450th career victory with the Govs regular-season ending victory against Eastern Kentucky. She has recorded 146 of those wins in her eight seasons in Clarksville.
  • The Govs victory against Texas Tech, Sept. 7, was their fourth win against a Power Five opponent during head coach Taylor Mott's tenure. It is the third consecutive year Austin Peay has downed a Power Five foe.
  • Austin Peay played its first 16 contests on the road, the longest road trip in program history. The Govs covered a total of 4,656 miles before their home opener, Oct. 4, against Southeast Missouri.
  • While APSU was the back-to-back defending Ohio Valley Conference champion entering 2019, it had a largely new look in 2019 as it lost its top outside hitter, primary setter and top middle blocker to graduation.
