TUNICA, Ms. –  After dropping its first two matches on day one, the Austin Peay men's golf team finished strong with a convincing victory over Tennessee State Tuesday to conclude play at the Carpenter/Chaney Classic.
The Govs fell to second-seeded UT Martin in the quarterfinals 5-0-1 before falling to third-seeded Belmont 3-2-1 in round two of the consolation bracket. Wrapping up the final day, APSU was dominant from start to finish in a 5-0-1 victory over Tennessee State.
Leading the way for Austin Peay were freshman Reece Britt and senior Jordan Rodriguez with two wins each. Britt was 2-0-1 at the Carpenter/Chaney Classic with wins over Belmont and Tennessee State. After dropping his first match to UT Martin, Rodriguez rallied with back-to-back wins over Belmont and Tennessee State. Five of the six golfers to compete for APSU registered one win during the two-day tournament.
The trio of Britt, Rodriguez, and senior Micah Knisley each ranked in the top 15 in total birdies during the two-day tournament with Knisley registering the Govs lone eagle. Both Knisley and Britt each ranked in the top ten in scoring at six-under on par fives at the Carpenter/Chaney Classic.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Govs who head to Columbia, Mo., for the Missouri Tiger Invitational, April 11-12. Austin Peay then travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for a one-day match play against Western Kentucky, April 20 before the OVC Championships in Cape Girardeau, Mo., April 24-26.
