JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After a solid opening round at The Blackthorn Club, Austin Peay State University men's golf finds itself within striking distance of the top-five going into moving day at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The Govs fired a three-under 285 to open play at the ETSU-hosted event and find themselves tied for seventh with Lamar after 18 holes. VCU (278) leads the event after Monday's opening round, followed by four-way tie for second between Kent State, Eastern Michigan, 27th-ranked Toledo and host and eighth-ranked ETSU, all at 280.
Senior Seth Smith led the way for the Govs Monday, opening with a 70. He was on fire on the back-nine, shooting a 33 thanks to a trio of birdies, including back-to-back chirpers on Nos. 17 and 18. The 475-yard par-4 at No. 17 played out as Monday's toughest hole, and was consistent with his overall play on par-4 holes during the opening 18—Smith averaged 3.70 strokes per hole on par-4s during the opening round, the fourth-best average of any player in the event.
Freshman Tyson Seyler was one shot behind Smith at 71; he led the Govs with six birdies on Monday and averaged 2.75 strokes per hole on par-3s, both of which placed him in the top-10 among all players.
Seniors John Mark Mills and Jack Dyer posted matching even-par 72s for the Govs on Monday. For his part, Dyer was consistent throughout the event, with 14 pars in the first 18 holes.
Junior Parker Elkins carded an opening-round 73 featuring 13 pars in his opening 18. Playing as the individual, junior Grady Cox was an even-par 72, helped by back-to-back birdies to open the back-nine.
