CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's baseball team fell to Lipscomb following a three-run eighth inning in its 11-8 series-opening loss, Friday, at Joe Maynard Field at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville, Tennessee.
How it Happened
Lipscomb got on the board first in the second inning with a solo shot off the bat of Blake Carter before redshirt sophomore Cole Johnson stepped up for Austin Peay and hit his third home run of the season over the right field wall, tying the game at a run.
The Bisons retook the lead in the third with a four-run inning, coming off back-to-back hits from Damion Kenealy Jr. and Cam Pruitt, each driving in two runs on their hits. Then, in the bottom half of the inning, the Governors worked the bases loaded to bring junior Ty Wisdom up to the plate. He would draw a walk to bring in a run before Johnson stepped up and hit a go-ahead grand slam for his second home run of the day.
The score went back and forth as the game entered the eighth inning, tied at eight. Then, Lipscomb rallied with two outs to bring Keaton Mahan to the plate with a pair of runners on. He doubled to right-center to clear the bases and put the Bisons up two runs. Aaron Stelogeannis followed up with an RBI single to left, which would be the final run of the game.
Senior Gavin Alveti, who entered the game in the fifth inning, closed out the game with five innings of work. He did pick up his first loss of the season, however, after allowing the three-run inning in the eighth. He fell to 0-1 on the year. The right-hander also struck out a season-high six batters in his relief appearance.
Johnson led the team offensively, driving in a career-high five RBI and hitting a single-game high two homers. His four hits match his career best, last achieved against North Alabama on April 26, 2025.
Senior Zion Taylor went 3-for-5 with a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. His three hits earned him his 12th multi-hit game of the season, which leads the Governors.
Another Gov who had a multi-hit performance was junior TJ Costello. It was his first-career multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of singles.
