Senior utility player Bobby Head, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named this week’s Austin Peay Athlete of the Week.

Head was a machine during Austin Peay’s final home series of the 2021 season against Jacksonville State, banging out 11 hits against the Gamecocks to garner both Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors and a spot on Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week powered by Diamond list.

Head became the third Gov since 1996 with a 10-hit weekend against weekend against a league opponent. He started things with a 4-for-5 outing in the opener, with a double and a pair of RBI. He was 3-for-4 in Saturday’s doubleheader opener and closing the twinbill with a 4-for-5 performance highlighted by two doubles, a homer and an RBI.

Including his 2-for-5 performance in the midweek against Belmont, Head hit .684 (13-for-19) on the week, raising his batting average from .280 to .322 heading into the final weekend of regular season action.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Second-year freshman Kenisha Phillips, of the track and field team, garnered gold in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes at the OVC Outdoor Championships in Charleston, Illinois. Her 23.35 in the 200-meter event shattered her own school record and she also helped the Govs to a silver medal showing in the 4x400-meter relay to close the championships.
  • Seniors Bailey Shorter and Kelsey Gray, of the softball team, both earned OVC All-Tournament honors—Gray’s first, Shorter’s second—at the 2021 OVC Softball Championships; the duo both hit .500 for the Govs, with driving in a run and stealing a base and Gray leading Austin Peay with a .667 on-base percentage.
