Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior outfielder Patrick Massoni, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Massoni was a catalyst from the lead-off spot last week for the Governors, hitting .615 (8-for-13) with a home run, two doubles, dour RBI and four runs scored as Austin Peay opened its Ohio Valley Conference scheduled with a sweep of Eastern Illinois.

The Danville, Calif., native opened the series with a 5-for-5 effort – the first five-hit game by a Governor since Reed Harper in 2013 – that included a solo home run and a double, driving in two in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. He and Clayton Smithson hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning, the first time a pair of Governors had gone back-to-back since P.J. Torres and Tyler Childress did it against UT Martin, April 1, 2012.

Massoni's performance netted him a share of this week's Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honor, with Belmont's Matt Beaty, as well as Tennessee Sports Writers Association Baseball Player of the Week recognition.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior Jovana Karac, of the women’s tennis team, won her match at No. 6 singles against Kennesaw State’s Ashleigh De Wet (7-5, 6-1).
  • Senior guard Kristen Stainback, of the women’s basketball team, led the Lady Govs with 17 points – including the 1,000th of her Austin Peay career – and seven rebounds in their opening-round loss to SIU Edwardsville in the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
  • Junior pitcher Jared Carkuff, of the baseball team, struck out a career-high 10 batters, allowing just two earned runs over six innings in winning the third game of Austin Peay’s series sweep against Eastern Illinois, Monday.
