Ashlee McGee combined to score the game's final 21 points as Austin Peay State University women's basketball team downed Tennessee-Martin, 58-52, in Ohio Valley Conference action, Thursday night at the Dunn Center.
The win ended the Lady Govs nine-game losing streak and they improved to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in league play. The Skyhawks lost their 12 of their last 13 and falls to 4-14 overall and 1-7 in conference action.
Austin Peay trailed by five points, 42-37, with 7:19 remaining when Armstrong and McGee combined to pull out the victory. McGee started things with a layup followed by Armstrong scoring the Lady Govs next 10 points ? her only points on the night ? as part of a 12-4 run that gave Austin Peay a three-point, 49-46, advantage with 3:45 left.
UTM's Crystal Fuller evened the score at 49-49 with a conventional three-point play before McGee scored APSU's final nine points to grab the victory.
The first half was a messy affair with neither team's offense finding its stride. The Lady Govs made just 7-of-28 (25 percent) of their field goals while the Skyhawks were 8-of-26 (30.8 percent). Tennessee-Martin led by as many as six points, 14-8, at the 8:05 mark only to watch Austin Peay score the game's next 11 points to take its largest lead, 19-14, with 3:19 remaining. A pair of Ashley Herring free throws with 23 seconds remaining gave APSU a 21-18 halftime lead.
McGee finished with a team-best 13 points and added five assists. Herring and Armstrong each finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Lady Govs committed a season-low 13 turnovers. Austin Peay recovered from its first half shooting woes with a 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) second-half performance and shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field for the game.
UTM's Fuller led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Phyllisha Mitchell added a 17-point, 18-rebound double-double effort. The Skyhawks were 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from the field in the second half and finished 21-of-56 (37.5 percent) from the field for the game.
Austin Peay will get a seven-day break before returning to action with a 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, league outing at Jacksonville State.
