Lady Govs face conference play to start New Year

The New Year will see Austin Peay women's basketball team begin the remainder of its Ohio Valley Conference schedule when it meets Tennessee Tech in a 5:30 p.m., Thursday contest in Cookeville.

The Lady Govs reenter league action amidst a four-game losing streak after dropping both games at the Lady Rebel Christmas Classic, Dec. 20 and 21. Senior Amber Bacon enjoyed the visit to Las Vegas, leading the team scoring-wise in both contests, including a 22-point outburst against Ball State in the consolation contest. However, the Lady Govs offense continued to sputter, scoring only 97 points in the two outings and making 32.7 percent of their field-goal attempts.

Entering conference play, freshman Ashley Herring leads APSU ? and all OVC freshmen ? in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game. Senior Ashlee McGee continues to lead the league with 5.4 assists per game.

Tennessee Tech opened the 2007-08 campaign winning at Memphis but has lost 11 straight since, including a 71-57 loss to Cincinnati, Saturday. However, only four of those losses have been by more than 15 points and they are being outscored by just 9.8 points per game.

Senior center Kristina Tyler leads the Golden Eagles in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg), placing her among the OVC's top 10 in both categories. Junior guard Meagan Lyons is adding 10.5 points per game.

The two teams have split the last two regular-season series with the home team winning each time. Tennessee Tech won in Cookeville last season, 63-51, behind Lyons 16-point performance. Then-senior Alicia Watson led APSU with 20 points and 13 rebounds while senior Amber Bacon added 14 points.

Due to a time conflict with the men's game at Tennessee-Martin, Thursday's game will not be available on radio or online at APSUGovernors.com. However, fans can catch the action through online video on OVCSports.tv.
