CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- Derek Wright scored 43 points, but Austin Peay men's basketball team lost its second-straight Ohio Valley Conference game, 121-116, at Southeast Missouri, Tuesday. The Govs fall to 13-9 overall and 9-3 in the OVC - a win by Murray State, Tuesday, puts the Govs into a tie for first place - while the Redhawks improve to 12-11 overall with 7-6 league clip. It snapped a six-game Redhawks losing streak.
Along with a career-high 43 points, Wright also collected a career-high tying seven steals. It was the first time a Govs player scored 40 points since Bubba Wells scored 43 against Morehead State in the first round of the 1996-97 OVC Tournament. He finished the night 11 of 26 from the floor, including a career-best five three pointers. The Los Angeles native was 16 of 20 at the free-throw line. He scored 20 of his points in the overtime periods.Drake Reed recorded his season's fourth double-double - 29 points and 10 rebounds. Fernandez Lockett also earn his season's fourth double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
The Govs trailed 45-37 at the break. They closed the Redhawks lead within one point, 49-48, at the 16:02 mark in the second half, but SEMO held on. In fact, the Redhawks never trailed in second half. A pair of free-throws by Wright at 5:47 made it 74-66, and after baskets by SEMO's Marcus Rhodes and Jaycen Herring, the Govs got hot.
Lockett had a dunk and Reed finished on a jumper in the paint to spark a Govs run. Lockett hit a pair of free throws, tying the game, 81-81, and closing a 12-3 half-ending run that forced overtime. Wright opened the extra period with a jumper and would go to score seven of the Govs 11 points in the frame. In fact, Wright stepped back to hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds left to tie the game at 92-92 and force the second overtime.
In the second OT, the Govs hit 5 of 7 at the free-throw line, but it was a missed free-throw by SEMO's Johnny Hill that left the score tied, 101-101, with 56 seconds left. Wright and Herring each missed a three-pointers to send it to the third.
Southeast Missouri went on to outscore Austin Peay 20-15 in the third overtime for the win.
The Governors shot just 37.4 percent (34 of 91) from the floor compared to 58.6 percent (41 of 70) for SEMO. APSU also was 37 of 54 from the free-throw line. In addition, the Govs forced 30 turnovers, including a season-best 19 steals.
The game was the first time the Govs broke the 100-point mark since the 1993-94 season when they outscored Bryan College, 117-57.
