Babington's 18 leads the Govs to a "Death Valley" sweep

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Senior Todd Babington scored 18 points in his career's final regular-season game, a 72-56 win over Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference action. The Govs improve to 21-10 overall with a 16-4 OVC mark, while Morehead State falls to 15-14 with a 12-8 league clip.

Although it was neck-and-neck throughout much of the first half, the Govs didn't see their first lead until more than 10 minutes into the game. A pair of free throws by freshman Caleb Brown gave the Govs a two-point, 22-20, lead they would not relinquish. In fact, it sparked a 7-0 Govs run after a layup by senior Fernandez Lockett and three-pointer by Brown made it 27-20. The lead would stay in single digits until the break, which saw the Govs leading 42-34.

After jumping to a quick 10-point lead on a Babington three-pointer, the Govs would start to give way, briefly, to the Eagles. Morehead State closed the gap to three points, 46-43, after a jumper by Jamyron Steward with 16:50 to play.  But then Brown would take over.

The freshman from Memphis knocked down a three-pointer and followed with a conventional three-point play, a layup and a free-throw, off a steal and outlet pass by junior Drake Reed. That sparked a 14-3 Govs run that put Austin Peay up 60-46 with 8:40 remaining. The Govs lead would hold in double-digits the rest of the way, getting as large as 20 points, 72-52, with 1:46 left, before settling on the final margin.

Brown finished with a career-high 16 points, the first time in double figures since he scored 12 points against Eastern Illinois, Jan. 7, at the Dunn Center. Reed added nine points and six rebounds, while Lockett - who was saddled with early foul trouble - scored eight points. The Govs shot 46.7 percent (24-of-51) from the field and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three. Babington knocked down 5 of 10 from three, while Brown was an efficent 3 of 4.

Kenneth Faried led Morehead State with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Steward joined him in double figures with 12 points. The Eagles were held to jusgt 37.5 percent shooting (21 of 56). It was the fourth straight game the Governors held the opposition to less than 40 percent from the field.
