Govs use big inning to down Redbirds

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? A six-run second inning proved just enough as Austin Peay State University's baseball team posted a 9-6 victory against Illinois State in the final game of the Austin Peay Invitational, Sunday afternoon, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Illinois State (3-3) broke on top early courtesy catcher Kevin Dubler's two-run home run off starter Ryne Mantooth in the first.

That lead would not make it past the second where Austin Peay (3-3) put together its largest run output of the season, plating six runs. Shortstop J.B. Gilbert and catcher Josh Purcell each had RBI singles. That was followed by three consecutive doubles by center fielder Rafael Hill, left fielder Josh Kemph and third baseman Tyler Farrar ? Hill's plating two runs while Kemph and Farrar each brought home one run.

The Govs would tack on another three runs ? which ultimately proved fortuitous ? in the fourth as third baseman Tyler Farrar had an RBI single, right fielder Will Hogue an RBI double and second baseman Greg Bachman finished the Govs scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Illinois State added a run in the sixth as Dubler led off the inning with a double and later scored on center fielder Corey Maines groundout. The Redbirds then threatened in the ninth loading the bases twice in the frame and chasing a pitcher in the process. ISU ultimately scored three runs and left the bases loaded as reliver Matt Kole ? the second pitcher of the frame ? induced a fielder's choice, a walk to load the bases and a strikeout to end the threat.

Mantooth (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out five over seven innings. Kole picked up his season's first save.

ISU starter Eric Theisen (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing six runs on six hits over the opening 1.2 innings. Reliever Dan Sorce was responsible for the three-run fourth, but otherwise stymied the Govs hitters as he posted nine strikeouts against five hits and three walks over his 5.1 innings.

Offensively, the Govs rapped out 11 hits with Hill, Farrar, Hogue and Bachman each posting two hits. Hill and Farrar were each named to the invitational all-tournament team along with APSU starter Stephen Huff.

Dubler led Illinois State's offense with a 2-for-4, two RBI, two run scored outing. Cole Marty and Kyle Cherney each had two hits as the Redbirds managed eight hits on the afternoon.

Austin Peay returns to action with a two-game, midweek series at East Tennessee, with games at 2 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Indiana downs Valparaiso in morning slugfest

Indiana scored in each of the first five innings and then held on to down Valparaiso, 17-14, in the fifth game of the Austin Peay Invitational, Saturday morning.

The Hoosiers scored six runs in the third inning then added a five-run fifth as part of a 17-run, 20-hit outing. Catcher Josh Phegley hit for the cycle as part of a 5-for-5, 5 RBI performance. Second baseman Evan Crawford added a 3-for-5 effort and third baseman Ethan Wilson was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Valparaiso scored seven runs in the fourth inning and tacked on another three runs in the seventh frame. The Crusaders mustered 14 runs on 19 hits, but could not keep pace. Second baseman Brett Bivens was 4-for-6 with 3 RBI to lead Valpo. Third baseman Josh Wallace added a 3-for-6, 2 RBI outing which included a leadoff home run in the third inning.

Indiana's Kyle Leiendecker (2-0) picked up the victory despite surrendering a 9-3 lead in the fourth inning. He allowed just one more run over his four-inning outing as the Hoosiers offense picked up the slack.

Valparaiso's Jay Clites ? the second of five pitchers ? was tagged for the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in just one-third of an inning. Starter John Snelten escaped a decision despite allowing eight runs on nine hits over the opening 2.2 innings.
