CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team picked up a split of its Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with Jacksonville State, dropping the first game, 19-7, before rallying to win the series finale, 4-1.
Austin Peay moved to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in conference action with the split. Jacksonville State moved to 11-15 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Game 1: Govs pitching unable to solve Gamecocks
Jacksonville State broke out the bats in game one, sending 35 batters to the plate in the third through sixth innings, on its way to a 19-7 victory. After two scoreless innings, the Gamecocks scored five in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and 10 in the sixth.
Austin Peay starter Ryne Mantooth (3-2) was tagged for the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over the first three innings. The Govs offense posted 10 hits, center fielder Rafael Hill, second baseman Chad Cunningham and first baseman Matt Kole each finishing with two hits. Kole was 2-for-3 with four RBI, including two doubles.
Jacksonville State starter Ben Tootle (4-2) picked up the victory after allowing five runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. The Gamecocks rapped out 18 hits, right fielder Clay Whittemore going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Left fielder Todd Cunningham was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and designated hitter Kyle McCreary was 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Game 2: Govs go deep for victory
Three home runs helped Austin Peay power past Jacksonville State, 4-1, to salvage the series finale.
The Gamecocks took advantage of a Governors error in the fourth to score the game's first run. Designated hitter Kyle McCreary reached on a single then advanced two bases as a pickoff by the Govs catcher sailed down the right field line. Center fielder Daniel Adamson scored the go ahead run with a single through the left side.
However, right fielder Will Hogue's leadoff home run in the fifth tied the game. One inning later, the Govs got a solo home run from third baseman Tyler Farrar to take the lead and a two-run blast shortstop Greg Bachman ? his season's first home run ? provided some insurance.
Closer Daniel Tenholder rebounded from his blown save, Saturday, and faced four batters in the seventh for his season's fifth save. Starter Ryne Harper (2-2) picked up the victory after holding Jacksonville State to one unearned run on six hits over six innings.
Jacksonville State starter Nick Hetland (1-5) was tagged for the loss after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings.
