Govs complete doubleheader sweep at East Tennessee

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ? The bottom three in the order had seven RBI as the Austin Peay State University baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of East Tennessee with a 9-7 victory in game two, Wednesday. The Govs won the day's first game, 6-5 in 10 innings.

Austin Peay (5-3) scored four runs in the second inning and five runs in the third then had to hold on as East Tennessee pounded out three home runs in an attempt to battle back. The Govs four-run second inning was punctuated by second baseman Greg Bachman's two-run double and catcher Josh Purcell's two-run home run, which put APSU ahead 4-1.

The Govs big third inning was helped along by shortstop J.B. Gilbert's two-run single which was bracketed by RBI singles from Bachman, center fielder Rafael Hill and third baseman Tyler Farrar, giving APSU a 9-1 advantage.

From there, East Tennessee (1-8) put on a home run clinic. Left fielder Derek Trent started the fireworks with his solo home run in the third inning, which was part of a three-run frame. He came back in the seventh with another solo shot that trimmed the APSU lead to 9-5. Third baseman Ben Allen's two-run blast in the eighth cut into the Govs lead even further, leaving them up 9-7.

But as was the case in the first game, reliever Daniel Tenholder came in and slammed the door retiring the side in the ninth for his season's first save just hours after picking up his season's first victory in game one. Reliever Jason Stoermer ? the Govs second pitcher of the day ? picked up the victory after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over 4.1 innings of work.

Bachman, Gilbert and Purcell ? the Govs seven, eight and nine-hole hitters ? combined for four hits and seven RBI. Bachman finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored.

ETSU's Chas Byrne (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in the first 2.1 innings. Bucs reliever Matt McGahey came on in relief and kept the Govs in check, allowing just one run on four hits over the next 5.2 innings.

Trent finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 RBI while Allen was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Bradley and Dayton in the 2008 Governors Classic this weekend. The Govs open the classic with a 2:30 p.m., Friday contest against Dayton. There will be two games ? the first at 11 a.m., the second at 2:30 p.m. ? both Saturday and Sunday.
