NASHVILLE, Tenn.
? A night after scoring 13 runs, Austin Peay State University's baseball team
saw few good scoring chances in an 8-1 loss against No. 23 Vanderbilt,
Wednesday night, at Hawkins Field.
Vanderbilt (21-11) had no such
offensive trouble, scoring in six of its eight innings. Shortstop Ryan
Flaherty's had a leadoff home run in the third for the game's only blast. After
a scoreless fourth, catcher Andrew Giobbi plated two with his double in the
fifth inning.
Austin Peay (15-15) had just three
baserunners before leaving the bases loaded in the fifth. The Govs finally
broke up the Commodores shutout bid in the sixth. First baseman Ryan Kole
doubled to start the inning and ? after two strikeouts and a passed ball ?
scored on shortstop Greg Bachman's single.
Govs starter Jeff Lykins was left
with the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits over 4.1
innings. Austin Peay's offense was limited to seven hits, Kole and left fielder
Josh Kemph each recording two hits.
Vanderbilt starter Chase Reid picked
up the victory with two innings of scoreless work. Flaherty finished the night
3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the ?Dores 12-hit offensive night.
Austin Peay returns to action when
it meets Samford in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series in Birmingham, Ala. The
series gets underway with a 1 p.m., Saturday, doubleheader before concluding
with a 1 p.m., Sunday, outing.
