NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team got out to a quick start but was unable to hold on as Vanderbilt posted a 10-5 come-from-behind victory, Tuesday night, at Hawkins Field.
Austin Peay (9-13) scored four runs in the first two innings and led 4-1 entering the bottom of the third. However, Vanderbilt sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the third and scored five runs on four hits. Commodores shortstop Alex McClure ? son of Govs head coach Gary McClure ? got the third started with a single, stole a base and scored but grounded out to end the frame with Vanderbilt leading 6-4.
Vanderbilt (15-8) held on to its lead courtesy a strong relief performance by Sean Bierman (2-1) who held the Govs to one run over five innings, allowing four hits but striking out seven en route to his season's second victory. The Govs scored just one run in the final seven innings ? an RBI single by left field Adam Browett.
The Commodores' offense extended its lead with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings and two insurance runs in the seventh sealed the victory.
Govs starter Ryne Mantooth (1-4) was tagged for the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks in the first 2.1 innings.
Center fielder Michael Blanchard led off the game with a home run and finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI. The one through five hitters in the Govs lineup accounted for all 10 hits. Browett went 3-for-4 while right fielder Jared Delong and third baseman Greg Bachman each had two hits.
Eight of the nine Vanderbilt starters batted in a run while posting at least one hit each. Second baseman Brian Harris led off the bottom of the first with a home run and finished 2-for-4. Left fielder Joe Loftus also posted a solo home run and finished 1-for-4.
Austin Peay returns to action with a 6 p.m., Wednesday contest against Evansville at Raymond C. Hand Park.
