CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Rapping out a season-high 12 hits, including six extra-base knocks certainly can cure what ails an offense as Austin Peay's baseball team discovered while posting a 12-4 victory against Indiana State, Wednesday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay's (3-5) first six hits were extra-base knocks ? three doubles, a triple and two home runs ? and helped the Govs post a 9-1 lead in the game's first four innings.
In the first, center fielder Michael Blanchard led off the game with a double. Following a wild pitch and a walk issued to right fielder Jared DeLong, shortstop Greg Bachman hit a two-run double to left field. One out later, first baseman Brooks Hunton hit his season's first home run, a two-run blast that put the Govs up 4-0. Left field Adam Browett followed with a triple into the right field corner and scored on designated hitter Daniel Baggett's sacrifice fly, giving Austin Peay a 5-0 lead.
Indiana State (8-2) broke through in the fourth courtesy right fielder Nick Ciolli's leadoff home run. It was one of only eight base runners permitted by Austin Peay starter Jack Snodgrass who retired four straight batters twice and induced a pair of double plays in his outing.
The Govs responded in their half of the fourth with four more runs. Second baseman Andrew Clement hit a one-out solo home run ? his season's first ? and APSU took advantage of three walks and two singles to score three more runs. Browett's two-run single pushing the lead to 9-1.
The Govs would go on to add two more runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh to extend their lead to 12-1.
Indiana State narrowed that deficit with three ninth-inning runs, scoring a run on a wild pitch and a pair of RBI singles, to set the game's final margin.
Snodgrass (1-0) picked up the victory, holding the Sycamores to one run on six hits over 6.2 innings. He permitted only one walk while striking out four.
Browett led the offensive charge with a 4-for-4, three-RBI outing. Bachman added a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance and Baggett finished with two RBI despite not recording a hit.
Indiana State starter Matt Bayes (0-1) was tagged for the loss after surrendering five runs on four hits in the first inning, the only inning he pitched. First baseman Joe Meggs and third baseman Luke Feiser each had three hits for the Sycamores.
Austin Peay returns to action with a three-game home series against Big 10 foe Iowa, beginning with a 3 p.m., Friday contest.
