CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? It took extra innings, but Austin Peay State University's baseball team posted its third straight victory with an 8-7 win against SIU Edwardsville in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon, at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay (13-17) needed home runs in the eighth and ninth innings to force extra innings. Second baseman Chris Lewellyn's solo home run in the eighth tied the game at 5-5. After Chilos Norris' two-run home run broke the tie in the ninth, third baseman Greg Bachman delivered the game-tying home run in the bottom of the frame to force extra frames.
The Govs threatened in the 10th, loading the bases with no outs, but a fielder's choice out at home and a double play on a fly out ended the threat. Austin Peay would not be denied in the 11th, catcher Haskell Fink leading off the frame with a single and ? one out later ? first baseman Matt Kole's infield single put a man in scoring position. Designated hitter Brooks Hunton cashed in with a double to right center, scoring the winning run.
SIU Edwardsville (5-18) rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a four-run sixth which included second baseman Josh Street's two-run home run. That 5-4 lead would hold up until the Govs late-inning effort.
Austin Peay reliever Daniel Tenholder (3-1) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on two hits in three innings while striking out three. Starter Jack Snodgrass surrendered five runs (three earned) over 5.1 innings before making way for Ricky Marshall who held SIUE scoreless over 2.2 innings.
Bachman led the Govs with a 2-for-6, 4 RBI performance. Starting catcher Trey Lucas and Lewellyn each had three hits as the Govs offense rapped out 16 hits on the afternoon.
SIU Edwardsville reliever Andrew Beatty (0-4) was tagged for the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits over the final 5.1 innings. Norris and street each had two RBI to lead the Cougars offense.
Austin Peay closes out its five-game homestand with a 6 p.m., Tuesday contest against mid-state foe Lipscomb.
