CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team scored the game's first six runs and then held on late for a 6-4 non-conference victory against Lipsccomb, Tuesday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay (14-17) scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings to jump out to a 6-0 advantage. The Govs scored two runs in the first with two out on back-to-back RBI hits by first baseman Matt Kole and third baseman Greg Bachman.
The Govs relied on their speed for two runs in the third. Centerfielder Michael Blanchard reached on a bunt single, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. One out later, leftfielder Adam Browett reached via a base on balls and stole second base, reached third on a strikeout and scored on Bachman's single. Austin Peay's final two runs came courtesy back-to-back RBI singles by Blanchard and Browett in the fourth, setting a 6-0 margin.
Meanwhile, Austin Peay starter Jeremy Dobbs was on cruise control in the game's first half. After allowing two base runners in the first inning, Dobbs locked down the Bisons offense by retiring 10 straight batters before surrendering a hit batsman in the fourth. He allowed just four baserunners in the game's first six innings before running into trouble in the seventh.
Lipscomb (13-18) finally solved Dobbs in the seventh, with a bunt single, walk and an infield error loading the bases. Leftfielder Channing Brown made the Govs pay with a two-run double to cut the lead to 4-2. However, Dobbs regained his composure, getting a strikeout and fly out before leaving the game. Reliever Ryne Mantooth induced a ground ball to end the frame.
The Bisons loaded the bases again in the eighth, sandwiching a single and two walks between a pair of outs to chase Mantooth. Reliever Ricky Marshall came on to record the third out and put the threat to bed.
Lipscomb rallied again in the ninth, with an error and a single followed by an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-4 with two out. However, Stephen Huff coaxed a strikeout from the Bisons to end the contest for his season's first save.
Dobbs (1-2) picked up his season's first victory after holding Lipscomb to two runs on four hits while striking out nine over 6.2 innings.
Blanchard had an impressive offensive outing, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and stealing four bases. Bachman added a 2-for-4, two RBI outing.
Lipscomb starter Martin Grude (0-1) was tagged for the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits over three innings. Reliever Davey Hackett held the Govs in check over the final five innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Centerfielder Tyler Wilson and shortstop Branden Cadavid each had two hits to lead the Bisons offense.
Austin Peay begins a four-game road trip with a 6 p.m., Wednesday contest at Evansville.
