Lady Govs battle SEMO to hard-fought draw

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's soccer team battled the rain and the Southeast Missouri Redhawks for a 1-1 tie, Sunday, at Morgan Brothers Field.

Austin Peay (6-1-2, 1-0-1 OVC) remains unbeaten through its first two games Ohio Valley Conference games for the first time since 2008, earning the program's best nine-game start. Southeast Missouri (2-4-2, 1-0-1) keeps pace with the Lady Govs in the OVC standings after defeating Murray State Friday.

The Lady Govs got on the board first thanks to a 40th-minute penalty kick from Tatiana Ariza. After Andy Quiceno was taken down in the box by a Redhawk defender, Ariza netted her program-best eighth career penalty kick to give the Lady Govs a 1-0 lead.

Southeast Missouri produced four first-half shots, forcing saves from sophomore Nikki Filippone in the 24th and 25th minutes. However, it would be their one second-half shot that produced the equalizer. Less than a minute into the second half, Natasha Minor fired a cross in to Erin Shulman, whose shot to the lower-right corner snuck past senior Haylee Shoaff to tie the game at one.

The Lady Govs would outshoot the Redhawks 13-1 for the game's remainder, but could not find the equalizer. Austin Peay would get several second-half chances, forcing six saves from the Redhawks Ashton Aubuchon after intermission.

Austin Peay's best chance came via Megan Sanchez in the 61st minute – her attempt on net got by Aubuchon but was cleared off the line by a Southeast Missouri defender to maintain the tie. Sanchez equaled Ariza's offensive effort with three shots and two shots on goal in 54 off-the-bench minutes for the Lady Govs.

“You have to score to win,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “I thought every piece of the puzzle was there today. We combined well and created very high-quality scoring opportunities, we just didn't have that final touch.”

Sanchez and senior Natalia Ariza both had late opportunities to score the game winner but neither shot found nylon. In overtime, Austin Peay attempted five shots to just one Redhawk attempt, eliciting two saves. Freshman Mary Ruth Locastro's attempt off a Lady Gov corner kick in the 107th minute was Austin Peay's final salvo of the afternoon.

Shoaff made one save, on a Christina Rohde shot in the 102nd minute, to earn the tie. Aubuchon made seven stops on the afternoon.

The Lady Govs had several chances off corner kicks, producing 10 chances, including six in the second half, while holding Southeast Missouri without a corner opportunity.

Four Lady Govs – Locastro, Natalia Ariza and seniors Corey Osborn and Emily Kink – played the full 110 minutes. It was the third 100-plus minute outing for Locastro, Osborn and Kink in 2013.

Austin Peay hits the road for the first time in OVC play next weekend, traveling to Cookeville for a 3 p.m., Friday match Tennessee Tech before heading down I-24 for a 2 p.m., Sunday match at Belmont.
