Five Govs tally double digits in exhibition victory

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Seniors Chris Horton and Khalil Davis led five Governors scoring in double figures, Thursday night, as Austin Peay State University rolled past Sewanee, 91-64, in men's exhibition basketball action played in Dave Aaron Arena.

The 6-8 Horton, a preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, scored 24 points, going 10-of-11 at the free-throw line, and grabbed 10 rebounds against the smaller Tigers, while Davis tossed in 15 points, including a trio of first-half three pointers, to go with a team-best six assists. Fellow backcourt mate Josh Robinson scored 16 points to complement Davis.

Meanwhile forward Kenny Jones went 5-of-5 from the field to score 10 points with his former Owens Community College teammate, guard John Murry, providing instant offense off the bench, netting 11 points. It included a trio of three pointers.

The Governors shot an impressive 55 percent (32 of 58) from the floor, going 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from the three-point line three nights after netting just a trio of three pointers against Thomas More. APSU also went 17-of-24 (71 percent) the free-throw line after shooting a woeful 56 percent in the exhibition opener.

Sewanee was led by guard Jorden Williams, who scored 20 points, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Cody Jones added 15, including five three pointers. Sewanee went an impressive 14-of-31 (45 percent) from three-point range, shooting 45 percent overall (23-of-51) as well.

The Governors three-quarters court defense helped forced the visitors into 22 turnovers, leading to 21 APSU points. The Governors 11 offensive rebounds turned into 20 second-chance points.

For the second straight time during the week, the Governors fell behind early (10-4 with 16:23 left in the half). But a 17-0 run, including a pair of Davis three pointers, put APSU up for good. Sewanee cut the deficit to 23-18 with 6:34 left in the half but that was as close as the Tigers could get. In fact, Murry scored all 11 of his points in the second half as the Governors steadily pulled away in the final 20 minutes.
