Player of the Game: Cayce Bredlau (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R)
Austin Peay (23-24, 14-14 OVC) dropped Game 1 of the three-game series against SIU Edwardsville, 9-4, on Friday at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Governors trailed 5-0 after four innings, but rallied back to come within one run after eight. However, the Cougars struck for four runs in the ninth, breaking the seal on the game.
Sophomore Cayce Bredlau drove in two of APSU's four runs in the contest courtesy of a two-run home run in the sixth.
THE LINEUP
Ridge Smith… Starting at third base, Smith went 1-for-5 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot.
Cayce Bredlau… Bredlau hit his seventh homer of the season, going 2-for-4 overall.
Garrett Copeland… Copeland was 1-for-4 with a RBI triple in the eighth inning.
Josh Wilson… Wilson went 0-for-4 on the day, putting the ball in play each time.
Alex Robles… Robles was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Chase Hamilton… Getting the start in center field, Hamilton went 1-for-4 with a single.
Dre Gleason… The sophomore was 2-for-4 which included an RBI single.
T.J. Marik… Starting at catcher, Marik was 0-for-2. Defensively, he gunned down two Cougars on the base paths.
Clayton Smithson… Smithson went 0-for-4 at the plate.
Patrick Massoni… Massoni entered as a pinch-hitter, grounding out in his only plate appearance.
Imani Willis… The freshman became a defensive replacement at second base, drawing a walk in his lone at-bat.
Kyle Blackburn… Blackburn was inserted as a pinch-runner, but did not hit.
ON THE MOUND
Austin Peay pitchers combined to allow nine runs on 10 hits in the contest.
Starting pitcher Alex Robles snapped a six-game winning streak, taking the loss on Friday. The right-hander allowed five runs on eight hits, tying the highest number of earned runs given up over his career.
Five Govs were summoned out of the bullpen, starting with A.J. Gaura, who recorded one strikeout before exiting.
From there, Levi Primasing, Zach Walton, Hunter Lindley, and Keirce Kimbel combined to get the final four outs of the game, giving up a combined four runs on top of five walks.
