Luna drives in three but Govs fall at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Outfielder Skyler Luna posted three RBI but it wasn't enough as Austin Peay State University's baseball team dropped its first road game of the season, 10-5, against Western Kentucky, Tuesday afternoon at Nick Denes Field.

Austin Peay (3-5) broke through first thanks to Luna's bat, his groundout to short in the second giving shortstop Bobby Head the opportunity to score from first base. Luna would add a RBI singles in both the fourth and eighth innings as part of his 2-for-4, three RBI day.

Western Kentucky (6-2) used patience at the plate to take the lead in its half of the second inning. The Hilltoppers saw four of their first five batters earn a walk, right fielder Eric Riffe tying the game with his bases loaded free pass. Second baseman Jack Wilson added a two-run double and would score on an error, giving WKU a 5-1 lead.

The Governors would climb back into the game in the fourth, with the first four batters of the inning reaching base safely. Luna's single would drive in a run before WKU traded two outs for a run. The Govs would get a third run on a wild pitch, but could not extend the inning further after getting within 7-4, but would get no closer the rest of the way.

APSU reliever Griffin Rivers (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs in the second inning.

WKU reliever Collin Lollar (1-0) picked up the win after holding the Govs to one run on a hit and a walk in 3.2 innings while striking out five of the 14 batters he faced.

Head scored three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks at the plate. Outfielder Malcolm Tipler also had two hits.

Hilltoppers second baseman Jack Wilson went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Riffe had four RBI in a 1-for-4 day at the plate.

Austin Peay continues its road trip with a three-game series at Jacksonville, Friday-Sunday.
