Governors Outhit by Vols at Rocky Top

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University's baseball team was outhit by the Volunteers of Tennessee as they fell 13-4 in midweek action, Tuesday, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

How it Happened

Tennessee jumped in front early in the bottom of the first, as the Volunteers had a leadoff double from Garrett Wright before coming around to score on a two-run home run from Henry Ford, who came into the contest as the home run leader for the Vols with nine on the season. One more run would come in to score on a base hit through the infield up the middle to put the Vols up by three.

The Vols and the Governors exchanged runs in the bottom of the second and top of the third. Tennessee scored its run on an infield single to go up by four. The Governors got their run back from redshirt junior Ray Velazquez's team-leading eighth home run this season.

The Vols piled on six runs in the bottom half of the third on four hits, which included a three-run home run from Wright. Sophomore right-hander Colin Carney came into the game in relief of the Governors' starter, Chance Cox, and retired the next two batters to escape the inning.

The two squads exchanged runs in the fifth, as senior Zion Taylor delivered a sacrifice fly to deep center, before Tennessee's Tyler Myatt hit a solo home run to make it 11-2.

Three innings later in the eighth, both teams were able to bring two runs across, as the game ended in a 13-4 score.

Up Next

The Governors will travel north of Knoxville to face Eastern Kentucky in week four of Atlantic Sun Conference play, starting at 6 p.m. (CT), Thursday, at Turkey Hughes Field in Richmond, Kentucky.
