Anthony Carter arguably was the top make track athlete in Austin Peay history. He was a four-time track All-American, the only Govs player believed to have accomplished that feat. Carter earned both indoor and outdoor All-America honors in the 1975-76 seasons. He set school records for the long jump (indoor and outdoor), triple jump (indoor and outdoor), 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, 60-yard dash and was a member of four record-setting relay teams – 440-yard (outdoor), 880-yard (outdoor) and mile (indoor). Carter helped lead APSU to the 1976 OVC Outdoor track Championship, including being part of a record-setting 440-relay team. As a result of his efforts, he was named the University’s 1976 Joy Award recipient, annually presented to the most valuable senior athlete. A Mobile, AL native, Carter’s track career was groomed at Booker T. Washington Junior and Toulminville High School, where he ran for Walter Rice. Following his APSU career, Carter spent four years in the Army, including a stint in Germany. During that stay, he ran on a German track team that Sports Illustrated chronicled. He received an honorable discharge in 1981. Carter was inducted posthumously into the APSU athletic hall. An innocent bystander, he was killed in a January 25, 1982 shooting incident in Mobile.
