Dr. A.R. Boyd’s value to APSU athletics over the years reaches far beyond the playing field. An Austin Peay graduate (Bachelor of Science, 1954) and former football player (1950 as a guard and tackle), Dr. Boyd served more than 25 years as the program’s chief physician.

During that period, he coordinated medical services for each athletic team. For many years, he traveled with the football program without compensation because he believed, with the nature of the sport, the presence of a physician was vital. He literally was on-call to the athletic training room staff and APSU athletes at all hours of the day and night...and weekends. It was done at no charge strictly for the better care of the student-athletes.

Dr. Boyd also served Student Health Services on campus for many years. He retired from his personal practice, Jan. 1, 1999, and retired from APSU, Aug. 31, with the title Team Physician Emeritus bestowed upon him
