APSU vs. UTM box

MARTIN, Tenn, ? Austin Peay State University men's basketball team scored the first four points of overtime and were never headed as it defeated Tennessee-Martin, 90-85, Thursday night in Ohio Valley Conference action in Skyhawk Arena.

The victory improves the Govs to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the OVC while the Skyhawks fall to 5-9 overall,1-3 in the OVC.

After the Skyhawks' Gerald Robinson tipped in the game-tying basket (80-80) to send the game to overtime, the Govs quickly regained the momentum. Senior forward Fernandez Lockett made a midcourt steal and subsequent dunk. Then guard Derek Wright forced a turnover that resulted in a Wright basket.

The Skyhawks were able to cut the deficit to one, 84-83, when Joe Bailey made the first of a two-shot foul. However, he missed the second, missing an opportunity to tie the contest. The two teams then traded misses before Drake Reed, with the shot clock winding down, made a spinning drive from the top of the circle to the basketball to give APSU a three-point cushion with less than two minutes left. It also allowed Reed to join APSU's 1000-point club.

UTM then missed a potential game-tying three pointer with APSU grabbing the rebound. APSU all but put it away when Wright delivered his career-best 12th assist, hitting a wide open Kyle Duncan for a layup to give APSU a 88-83 advantage with 1:11 left.

The Govs led by as much as eight second-half points only to watch the Skyhawks rally. APSU, in fact, trailed by four, 78-74, with 1:44 left. That was before Reed hit a jumper and two free throws to tie the game. Duncan then hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to give APSU the short-lived lead only to see Robinson tie it at the buzzer.

Five Governors scored in double figures, led by Todd Babington's 18. Reed finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his season's second double-double. Lockett added 16 points while Duncan had 15 and Wes Channels 13 before fouling out.

The balanced scoring offset the double-pronged UTM attack of Lester Hudson and Marquis Weddle. The former, the nation's leading scorer, finished with 31 points while Weddle added 27. Robinson, who finished with 11 points, was the only other Skyhawk in double figures.

Austin Peay had a season-best 23 assists in the game and committed a season-low five turnovers.
