CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
? Austin Peay State University's baseball team swept a doubleheader playing two
different styles of baseball, downing Morehead State 26-4 and 4-3, Saturday
afternoon, in Ohio Valley Conference action at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay improved to 14-13
overall and 4-4 in conference play, but remains in seventh place in the league
standings. Morehead
State falls to 8-18
overall and 1-7 in league action.
GAME 1: Govs offense explodes for 26 runs in win
Austin Peay scored in every inning
but the seventh and got a school-record ? and OVC record tying ? six hits from
Chad Cunningham in a 26-4, game-one victory against Morehead State.
Cunningham ? who was 6-for-7 with 3
RBI ? wasn't the offense's only story as third baseman Tyler Farrar was 5-for-5
with eight RBI, including two doubles and a fourth-inning grand slam. Then
Brooks Hunton, who entered the game in the fifth, had a two-run home run in the
sixth and a three-run home run in the eighth to finish 2-for-2 with 5 RBI.
The offensive outburst nearly
overshadowed an outstanding appearance by Govs starter Stephen Huff (3-3) who
took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before seeing in broke up with a one-out
single. Huff went on to pitch seven scoreless innings while allowing two hits
and two walks while striking out eight.
Morehead State's lone offensive highlight came in
the eighth when right fielder Michael Fahs broke up the Austin Peay shutout bid
with a grand slam, his season's first home run. MSU starter Tyler Bess (2-5)
was tagged for the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits
and three walks over the first 2.1 innings.
GAME 2: Govs see starter go down, but pick up victory
Austin Peay got a scare when Ryne Harper, its game two starter, left the game after five pitches due to an arm
injury. Morehead State jumped on the early departure and
scored a run to take an early 1-0 lead on first baseman Marc Midden's RBI
single.
The Govs took the lead in the second
on designated hitter Brooks Hunton's two-run double. Austin Peay had an
opportunity to extend its lead in the third as a pair of Morehead State
errors loaded the bases with two outs, but could not score and led 2-1.
Morehead State tied the game in the fifth with
third baseman Michael Fear's run-scoring single.
But Austin Peay retook the lead in
the sixth when second baseman J.B. Gilbert doubled off the wall in left center
to drive home the go-ahead run.
The Eagles did not go down easily
and tied the game again on shortstop Drew Lee's solo home run ? his season's
first ? off Govs closer Daniel Tenholder.
The Govs used a Eagles' error in the
seventh to score the game-winning run. Center fielder Rafael Hill led off the
inning with a walk and moved to third when MSU reliever Michael Fahs threw wide
of first base on left fielder Josh Kemph's sacrifice bunt attempt. The Eagles
then intentionally walked Farrar to load the bases. First baseman Matt Kole
took the first pitch he saw to deep right field for the sacrifice fly.
Tenholder (3-0) picked up the
victory after allowing the home run as one of his two hits in the ninth. David Vicini came on in emergency relief and made an admirable appearance,
surrendering just one run on three hits over six innings while striking out
six.
Offensively, the Govs need just four
hits for the victory, utilizing seven base on balls. Gilbert had the Govs only
multi-hit effort, finishinig 2-for-3.
Fahs (0-2) was tagged for the loss
after surrendering the one unearned run. Lee was 2-for-3 for the Eagles who
outhit the Govs with five hits.
Austin Peay and Morehead State
will conclude their three-game OVC set with a 1 p.m., Sunday, contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
