Box Score CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay scored five runs in the first
inning and rolled to an 11-4 non-conference victory against Middle Tennessee,
Wednesday night at Reese Smith Field.
Austin Peay (13-14) sent 10 men to the plate in the opening
inning, scoring five times. The Govs scored their first run courtesy a Middle
Tennessee error but then got RBI singles from first baseman John Hogan and a
sacrifice fly by shortstop Reed Harper. Catcher Matt Wollenzin capped the inning
with a RBI single that provided the eventual game-winning run.
Governors' starter Andy Cox held the Blue Raiders to four
runs over four-plus innings. Austin Peay's bullpen came in and did not allow a
run over the final five innings to secure the victory. Reliever Zach Toney
(2-2) picked up the victory after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings after relieving
Cox.
Middle Tennessee (8-20) scored two runs in the first and
added solo runs in the third and fourth but saw plenty of opportunities pass it
by, leaving 14 men on base.
The Governors added runs in the third and fourth frames but
put the game away in with a three-run fifth punctuated by first baseman John Hogan's two-run single. Austin Peay added another run in the eighth, to set the
final score.
Austin Peay's 11-run outburst was its first double-digit
scoring effort since March 8 - a stretch of 16 games. Hogan finished 2-for-6
with a team-best three RBI. Wollenzin went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Middle Tennessee starter Jud Stoltz (0-1) suffered the loss
after allowing five runs on five hits while only recording one out in the
first. MTSU designated hitter Matt Drake had three hits and two RBI to lead the
Blue Raiders 11-hit attack.
Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Eastern Kentucky
in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, beginning with a 1 p.m., Saturday
doubleheader at Raymond C. Hand Park.
