Govs swamped early in loss at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Austin Peay saw its seven-game win streak stopped with an 8-3 non-conference loss to Evansville, Wednesday night at Braun Stadium.

Evansville (27-17) scored six runs in the first two innings - first baseman Cody Fick delivering four runs with his two-run home run in the first and a two-run double in the second.

Austin Peay (25-20) broke up the shutout bid in the fourth. Shortstop Reed Harper extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a leadoff double. After advancing to third on catcher Matt Wollenzin's ground out, left fielder Tyler Childress brought home the run with a sacrifice fly.

The Purple Aces added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth before the Govs pitching staff settled in with four pitchers combining to toss four scoreless innings.

First baseman John Hogan notched his season's eighth home run with a leadoff blast in the sixth to narrow the gap to 8-2. Designated hitter Cody Hudson led off the ninth with a double and scored on third baseman Greg Bachman's double, capping the night's scoring.

Austin Peay starter Andy Cox (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs before leaving in the second inning. Wollenzin and second baseman Jordan Hankins both had two hits - the Govs only multi hit outings.

Center fielder Greg Wallace had three hits and two RBI to lead Evansville which won despite being outhit, 10-9. Fick finished with two hits and four RBI.

Evansville starter Josh Biggs (5-0) threw three scoreless innings to pick up the victory.

Austin Peay returns home to host a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Southeast Missouri. The three-game set between the league's top two teams begins with a 1 p.m., Saturday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
