GOVS-EAGLES POSTGAME QUOTES

Austin Peay head coach Jeff Faris

Opening Statement… "I couldn't be more proud of our group, the way that we came and played a complete football game… We've got a long way to go and a lot of getting better to do, but I'm proud of our progress. The best part is that our guys understand that in the way that they work. I thought our Wednesday practice this week was as good as we've had, and the guys responded because we didn't practice the way we needed to on Tuesday, which tells me we have the right group of guys in our locker room. I couldn't be more proud and excited."

On his program… "We have 110 players, and we develop them all. We go two-spot, and every kid gets coached. I've got the best assistant coaching staff in the country. I think you say the same thing for the offensive line and the receiver group. Our tight end group got Alec Pell back today. Austin Smith is a heck of a quarterback, and he just happens to be here with Chris, and they make each other better every day."

On offensive lineman Chandler Kirton… "Chandler Kirton scored a touchdown today. He's everything that's right with Austin Peay football. He could have left, but he wanted to stay, and he knew the first year was going to be tough because of all the attrition. But he stayed, and he's built a foundation and a culture. So, I think the confidence has been earned. We didn't play a very easy schedule. We played two FBS teams, let's talk about that for a second. These kids haven't flinched. This culture, this community hasn't flinched, and I'm excited."

Austin Peay running back Isaiah Groves

On recovering from an injury during his final prep season… "The first week after I tore my ACL, it was emotional; I couldn't play my senior year. So, working through that and having my mom push me to go to rehab every day and get better so I can come out and play, I felt like my old self today because my teammates were pushing me."

Austin Peay offensive lineman Chandler Kirton

On the Govs' process… "I think it starts with our everyday process throughout the week. Coach Faris always says, Sunday through Friday needs to be the best, the elite. And I think it's important that you go in every day, and you attack every day, because how you're going to work during the week is how you're going to come out on Saturday night and play. So, I think we put together a really good process throughout the week, and it paid off."

On Austin Peay… "This place is like a family to me. When I was coming out of high school, I had an offer from every division except the FBS. Austin Peay was my only Division I offer. They took a chance on me, and it's been a heck of a ride so far, and it's not over yet. But I'm extremely fortunate. It's great to be around everyone here; they push me every day to be the best person, on and off the field, so that's the reason I stayed, and I'm darn glad I did."
