Clarksville, Tenn.–Senior Claudia Yanes Garcia, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The Spanish sensation led the Govs to sweeps of Tennessee State and North Alabama last week, running Austin Peay’s record to 13-0 on the season and keeping her own mark unblemished at 12-0.

She and sister Lidia have now won four straight matches at No. 2 doubles, with a 6-1 win against North Alabama and a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing against Tennessee State. In singles, Yanes Garcia parlayed a 6-0, 6-1 win against UNA’s Sydney Flesch at No. 2 into a chance at No. 1, where she took down Tennessee State’s Aarushi Kakkar in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior utility man Brett Newberg, of the baseball team, struck out five of the 12 batters he faced over four innings last week, securing two saves in Austin Peay wins against Western Kentucky and Southeast Missouri and earned OVC Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
  • Sophomore Christian Edison, of the men’s tennis team, earned his first career OVC Player of the Week honor with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Tennessee State and a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles paired with Timo Kiesslich.
  • Sophomore sprinter Sabrina Richman, of the track and field, took runner-up honors in the 400m dash with a 55.21 mark at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay in Nashville as well to help the Govs take runner-up in the meet’s final event, helping her earn OVC Runner of the Week honors for the third time in 2019. She leads the OVC and ranks 27th in the region in the 400m dash.
