Senior Danielle Morris, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, has been named this week’s Austin Peay Athlete of the Week.

On the heels of her second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, Morris what would be the clinching points in Austin Peay’s second-straight OVC Women’s Tennis Championship, Sunday, in Evansville. After dropping the first set in an extended tie-breaker (11-9), Morris handily won the second set in her No. 2 singles match to keep hope alive for the Govs with the team championship tied at three apiece.

Facing a 5-5 tie in the third set, Morris won the penultimate game of the match to take a 6-5 lead, then clinched the title for the Govs when Southeast Missouri’s Daniela Hlacikova returned Morris’ serve into the net to touch off a wild celebration for the Governors.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior duo Brooke Moore and Jenna Panning, of the beach volleyball team, won four times as the Govs No. 2 pairing last week, with their only loss coming when they played as the Govs No. 1 against Morehead State. Panning and Moore are 6-0 as the Govs No. 2 pairing this season, and are 5-3 when playing as the No. 1 pairing.
  • Senior infielder Malcolm Tipler, of the baseball team, hit .455 (5-for-11) in three league games against SIU Edwardsville last week, scoring six times and driving in a pair of runs hitting in the two-hole. He provided the big blow in the 12th inning of the series opener, smoking a walk-off home run to left-center to decide the game.
  • Senior Austin Lancaster, of the men’s golf team, tied for 12th in his final appearance as a Gov at the 2021 OVC Men’s Golf Championships. His 219 (77-70-72) led the Govs, while his 4.50 stroke average on par-5 holes tied for the tournament best and his 34 pars were a team high.
